SWIFT gpi status codes in plain words
A SWIFT gpi status has two parts: an ISO 20022 status code that says where the payment stands, such as ACSP (in progress), ACCC (credited) or RJCT (rejected), and often a gpi reason code from G000 to G006 that says why, for example G003 (held for documents). Some banks show a hold as PDNG (on hold).
Below is every code in plain words: what it means for your money, the usual next status, what to do now and who to contact.

All codes at a glance
Status codes describe the stage of an international wire. ACCC, RJCT and CANC are final; the others change as the payment moves.
| Code | In plain words | Final status |
|---|---|---|
| ACSP | Accepted and in progress. With G000 or G001 a bank has passed the payment on; with G002, G003 or G004 the beneficiary’s bank is holding the credit. | No |
| PDNG | A bank is checking the payment, or the beneficiary’s bank is waiting for documents or funds before it credits the account. | No |
| ACSC | Settlement between the banks is complete. The beneficiary’s bank still has to post it to the account. | No |
| ACCC | The beneficiary’s bank reports the money on the account. This is the final step. | Yes |
| RJCT | A bank refused the payment. The funds normally go back to the sender, often minus fees. | Yes |
| CANC | Stopped at the sender’s request before the beneficiary was credited. | Yes |
Reason codes explain a status: whether the payment was passed on, held or delivered.
| Code | In plain words | Type |
|---|---|---|
| G000 | Passed to the next bank, which reports its progress. | Passed on |
| G001 | Passed to the next bank or payment system, which continues outside gpi tracking. | Passed on |
| G002 | The beneficiary’s bank may confirm the credit only on a later day. | Hold |
| G003 | Held: the beneficiary’s bank is waiting for documents from the beneficiary. | Hold |
| G004 | Held: the beneficiary’s bank is waiting for the cover funds. | Hold |
| G005 | Delivered to the beneficiary’s bank, credit not yet confirmed. | Delivered |
| G006 | Delivered to the beneficiary’s bank, which credits it outside the gpi service level. | Delivered |
Payment status codes
Banks report the progress of a SWIFT payment with ISO 20022 payment status codes. SWIFTarius shows the code each bank reported, with the time of the report, and says what it means for your money.
ACSP: In transit
Accepted and in progress. With G000 or G001 a bank has passed the payment on; with G002, G003 or G004 the beneficiary’s bank is holding the credit.
- For your money
- The payment is on its way through the banks and is not on the beneficiary’s account yet. The reason code next to ACSP adds the detail, for example G000: passed to the next bank, or G003: held for documents.
- Usual next status
- Another ACSP from the next bank, then ACCC when the beneficiary’s bank credits the account. If the beneficiary’s bank holds the credit, its report carries G002, G003 or G004, with ACSP in the SWIFT gpi Tracker or PDNG at some banks.
- What to do now
- With G002, G003 or G004, follow the steps for that reason code. Otherwise nothing yet: payments wait for cut-off times, weekends and holidays. If the status has not changed for two days, ask the sending bank to investigate the payment. SWIFTarius flags a payment with no movement for two days and has a draft letter for the request.
- Who to contact
- Sender: your bank. Recipient: the sender, who can ask their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
All preceding checks such as technical validation and customer profile were successful and therefore the payment instruction has been accepted for execution.
PDNG: On hold
A bank is checking the payment, or the beneficiary’s bank is waiting for documents or funds before it credits the account.
- For your money
- The payment is paused. It has not been rejected and has not been credited to the beneficiary yet. A reason code G002, G003 or G004 means the beneficiary’s bank is holding the credit and says why.
- Usual next status
- ACSP or ACCC when the bank releases the payment; RJCT if the bank refuses it.
- What to do now
- Read the reason code. With G003, ask the beneficiary to contact their bank, which is waiting for documents from them; with G004, ask your bank when and through which bank the cover funds were sent. Without a reason code, this is usually a check on the bank’s side: if the hold lasts more than two days, ask the sending bank what is required to complete the payment.
- Who to contact
- Sender: your bank, or the beneficiary when their bank holds the credit. Recipient: your bank, which may have asked you for documents.
- ISO 20022 definition
Payment instruction is pending. Further checks and status update will be performed.
ACSC: Settled
Settlement between the banks is complete. The beneficiary’s bank still has to post it to the account.
- For your money
- The money has been settled between the banks. The beneficiary’s bank posts it to the account next.
- Usual next status
- ACCC, when the beneficiary’s bank reports the credit.
- What to do now
- Usually nothing. If the credit has not been confirmed within two days, the beneficiary should contact their bank and quote the UETR.
- Who to contact
- Recipient: their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Settlement completed.
ACCC: Credited
Final statusThe beneficiary’s bank reports the money on the account. This is the final step.
- For your money
- The beneficiary’s bank reports that the money is on the beneficiary’s account.
- Usual next status
- None. ACCC is a final status, and SWIFTarius ends watch mode for the payment.
- What to do now
- Let the beneficiary know. If they do not see the money yet, they can ask their bank, quoting the UETR and the time of the credit report.
- Who to contact
- Recipient: their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Settlement on the creditor's account has been completed.
RJCT: Rejected
Final statusA bank refused the payment. The funds normally go back to the sender, often minus fees.
- For your money
- The payment will not be credited in this form. The money normally goes back to the sender, often minus the fees of the banks involved.
- Usual next status
- None. RJCT is a final status; to pay again, the sender makes a new payment.
- What to do now
- Ask the sending bank for the reason code and when the funds will be returned. Fix the cause, for example the account number or the beneficiary’s name, before you send the payment again.
- Who to contact
- Sender: your bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Payment instruction has been rejected.
CANC: Cancelled
Final statusStopped at the sender’s request before the beneficiary was credited.
- For your money
- The payment has been stopped. The money normally goes back to the sender.
- Usual next status
- None. CANC is a final status.
- What to do now
- If you did not ask for a cancellation, contact the sending bank.
- Who to contact
- Sender: your bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Payment initiation has been successfully cancelled after having received a request for cancellation.
gpi reason codes G000-G006
A gpi reason code travels with the status and explains it. G000 and G001 say where the payment went next, G002, G003 and G004 explain why the beneficiary’s bank holds the credit, and G005 and G006 report delivery to the beneficiary’s bank.
G000: Passed to the next bank
Passed to the next bank, which reports its progress.
- For your money
- The reporting bank has done its part. The next bank in the chain has the payment and sends its own update.
- Usually comes with
- ACSP (in transit)
- Usual next status
- A report from the next bank: ACSP with its reason code, or ACCC from the beneficiary’s bank.
- What to do now
- Nothing. With watch mode on, SWIFTarius messages you as soon as a bank in the chain updates the status.
- Who to contact
- No one yet.
- ISO 20022 definition
The Status Originator transferred the payment to the next Agent or to a Market Infrastructure. The payment transfer is tracked. No further updates will follow from the Status Originator.
G001: Passed on outside gpi tracking
Passed to the next bank or payment system, which continues outside gpi tracking.
- For your money
- The payment has moved on. The next update comes from a bank further along when it reports, and the beneficiary’s bank can confirm the credit directly.
- Usually comes with
- ACSP (in transit)
- Usual next status
- ACCC, when the beneficiary’s bank confirms the credit.
- What to do now
- Ask the beneficiary to check the account, or to ask their bank and quote the UETR.
- Who to contact
- Recipient: their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
The Status Originator transferred the payment to the next Agent or to a Market Infrastructure. The payment transfer is not tracked. No further updates will follow from the Status Originator.
G002: Credit may not be confirmed today
The beneficiary’s bank may confirm the credit only on a later day.
- For your money
- The beneficiary’s bank has the payment and may confirm the credit only on a later day, for example after its cut-off time or an internal check. The same bank sends the next update.
- Usually comes with
- ACSP (in the SWIFT gpi Tracker); some banks show the hold as PDNG (on hold)
- Usual next status
- ACCC from the same bank once it credits the account.
- What to do now
- Wait until the next business day. If the credit is still not confirmed after two days, ask the beneficiary to check with their bank and quote the UETR.
- Who to contact
- Sender: the beneficiary, who can ask their bank. Recipient: their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Credit to the creditor’s account may not be confirmed same day. Update will follow from the Status Originator.
G003: Held for documents
Held: the beneficiary’s bank is waiting for documents from the beneficiary.
- For your money
- The payment has reached the beneficiary’s bank, which holds the credit until the beneficiary provides the documents or details it asked for, for example an invoice, a contract or the purpose of the payment.
- Usually comes with
- ACSP (in the SWIFT gpi Tracker); some banks show the hold as PDNG (on hold)
- Usual next status
- ACCC once the bank accepts the documents; RJCT if they are not provided.
- What to do now
- Ask the beneficiary to contact their bank, quote the UETR and provide the documents it asked for. If the beneficiary needs papers from you, such as the invoice or the contract, send them to the beneficiary.
- Who to contact
- Sender: the beneficiary, who deals with their bank. Recipient: your bank, which has asked you for documents.
- ISO 20022 definition
Credit to creditor’s account is pending receipt of required documents. The Status Originator has requested creditor to provide additional documentation. Update will follow from the Status Originator.
G004: Waiting for cover funds
Held: the beneficiary’s bank is waiting for the cover funds.
- For your money
- The payment instruction has reached the beneficiary’s bank, but the money that covers it, sent separately through correspondent banks, has not arrived yet.
- Usually comes with
- ACSP (in the SWIFT gpi Tracker); some banks show the hold as PDNG (on hold)
- Usual next status
- ACCC once the cover funds arrive.
- What to do now
- Ask the sending bank when and through which bank the cover was sent.
- Who to contact
- Sender: your bank. Recipient: their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Credit to the creditor’s account is pending, status Originator is waiting for funds provided via a cover. Update will follow from the Status Originator.
G005: Delivered to the beneficiary’s bank
Delivered to the beneficiary’s bank, credit not yet confirmed.
- For your money
- The money has reached the beneficiary’s bank, which works to the gpi service level. The credit to the account comes next.
- Usual next status
- ACCC, when the beneficiary’s bank credits the account.
- What to do now
- Usually nothing. If the credit is not confirmed within two days, the beneficiary should contact their bank.
- Who to contact
- Recipient: their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Payment has been delivered to creditor agent with service level.
G006: Delivered, outside the gpi service level
Delivered to the beneficiary’s bank, which credits it outside the gpi service level.
- For your money
- The money has reached the beneficiary’s bank, which credits it on its own timetable. The beneficiary can confirm the credit on their account.
- Usual next status
- ACCC, when the beneficiary’s bank confirms the credit.
- What to do now
- Ask the beneficiary to check the account, or to ask their bank and quote the UETR.
- Who to contact
- Recipient: their bank.
- ISO 20022 definition
Payment has been delivered to creditor agent without service level.
Other accepted statuses
Some banks report a more specific acceptance code before or instead of ACSP. Each one means the payment is accepted and still in progress.
- ACTC: Accepted: the technical checks have passed. ISO 20022:
Authentication and syntactical and semantical validation are successful
- ACWC: Accepted with a change, for example to the date. ISO 20022:
Instruction is accepted but a change will be made, such as date or remittance not sent.
- ACWP: Accepted, not yet posted to the beneficiary’s account. ISO 20022:
Payment instruction included in the credit transfer is accepted without being posted to the creditor customer’s account.
Reason codes on a rejection
A rejected payment (RJCT) comes with an ISO 20022 reason code that names the cause. These are some of the codes banks use:
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| AC01 | The account number is invalid or missing. |
| AC04 | The account is closed. |
| AC06 | The account is blocked. |
| BE01 | The name or identification of the customer does not match the account number. |
| RR03 | The beneficiary’s name or address, needed for regulatory reasons, is missing or insufficient. |
| RR04 | Regulatory reason. |
| AM05 | Duplicate payment. |
| MS03 | The bank has not given a reason. |
| NARR | The reason is given as free text. |

- UETR
- Unique End-to-end Transaction Reference: the 36-character reference of a SWIFT payment, such as cf935c67-a3ac-4d58-b2fc-bf2267a14ecd. It stays the same at every bank along the route. What is a UETR and where to find it.
- SWIFT gpi
- SWIFT’s service for fast, trackable cross-border payments; gpi stands for global payments innovation. Member banks update the gpi Tracker at each step, so a payment can be followed by its UETR from the first bank to the credit.
- gpi Tracker
- SWIFT’s cloud database of payment status updates by UETR. Banks read and update it through SWIFT messages, a browser screen or an API.
- Universal confirmations
